The words

Lyrics

Intro

One-eighty One-ninety Two hundred on the screen Narrow and regular Fast as I've ever seen Pads are on Line is in Nothing slowing down Time to call the mothership And turn this rhythm around

Verse 1

Patient says his heart took off Like a motor with no brakes Pressure's holding, color's good But his heart still shakes Bearing down did nothing Tried the vagal every way Still that rhythm's flying Like it's got somewhere to be today Called it in to medical control Sent the rhythm through Expected something complicated Some brilliant thing to do

Pre-Chorus

Narrow complex Regular rate Stable pressure Patient awake If the system won't respond And nothing else gets through There's one reliable solution When you don't know what to do

Chorus

Turn it off And back on again Six milligrams And send it in Push it fast Flush behind Everybody watch the line Turn it off And back on again

Tag

When the circuit’s running wild Give the system half a second Then restart it with a smile Turn it off And back on again

Verse 2

Six went racing through the line We watched it reach the heart For one beautiful little moment Everything came apart Complexes disappeared The room forgot to breathe Then one beat crawled across the screen Like waking from a dream But the rhythm found its footing And went racing off once more Two hundred blinking proudly Just exactly like before Back onto the radio With one update to send Apparently the first reboot Didn't work in the end

Pre-Chorus

System failed Problem remains Same old rhythm Same complaint If the first attempt did nothing Then we simply try again Increase the troubleshooting And kindly stand by then

Chorus 2

Turn it off And back on again Twelve milligrams And send it in Push it fast Flush behind Everybody watch the line Turn it off And back on again

Tag

When the circuit's running wild Give the system half a second Then restart it with a smile Turn it off And back on again

Breakdown

No error code No loading wheel No warning light to say whats real No keyboard shortcut No escape Just two hundred beats that won’t behave Check the leads Confirm the rate Make sure it’s regular and straight Then when every other option ends Call support and try again

Bridge 1

Reboot Restart Reset The heart Reboot Restart Back to the start Six goes in Twelve if needed Push Flush Reboot Completed

Bridge 2

Turn it off And back on again Turn it off And back on again Sometimes medicine And I.T are friends Push it fast Flush behind Say a little prayer And watch the line

Chorus 3

Turn it off And back on again From two-hundred down to ten For one terrifying moment Before the heart boots up again No spinning wheel No progress bar Just adenosine resetting the heart When SVT won’t reach an end Turn it off And back on again

Outro

Reboot Restart Reset the heart Reboot Restart Back to the start Turn it off And back on again

About this song

There are few things in medicine quite like watching a heart decide that 200 beats per minute seems perfectly reasonable.

Enter adenosine.

“Turn It Off” is about the strange elegance of treating a regular narrow-complex tachycardia with a medication whose effect can look remarkably similar to the first troubleshooting step offered by every I.T. department on Earth.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

The comparison is almost too perfect.

The rhythm is racing.

Vagal maneuvers didn't solve it.

The line is ready.

The monitor is front and center.

Then comes the push.

For one spectacularly uncomfortable moment, the electrical activity changes, the monitor becomes extremely interesting, and everyone watches to see what comes back.

Sometimes the reboot works.

Sometimes the rhythm immediately races off again and troubleshooting continues.

That's part of what makes SVT such a satisfying rhythm to treat: not because there's anything enjoyable about someone having a heart rate north of 200, but because recognition can lead to a remarkably direct treatment pathway.

The whole thing is fast.

Dramatic.

Occasionally terrifying to watch.

And conceptually hilarious.

Push.
Flush.
Reboot.

Turns out medicine and I.T. occasionally have more in common than anyone expected.
