The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

Gather close and hear the story Of a legend still alive Failed every simulation Yet somehow still survived Missed the obvious diagnosis Lost the stretcher twice a week Asked if twelve leads needed batteries And somehow kept his seat

Pre-Chorus

The preceptors all tried The supervisors too Yet every remediation Somehow simply floated through

Chorus 1

He's the Orientation Miracle The legend still survives Defying every standard By which a medic qualifies No one knows the secret No one knows the trick Yet somehow every year he grows More powerful than this

Verse 2

He once called for medical control To ask what "dead" should mean Misplaced three oxygen cylinders That he swore he'd never seen His narratives are ancient riddles His assessments mostly vibes Yet every monthly evaluation Says he's doing just fine

Pre-Chorus

The QA team investigates Coworkers start to talk But every time they look his way The paperwork just walks

Chorus 2

He's the Orientation Miracle The mystery remains Every system tried to stop him Yet he slips through every chain No one knows the secret No one knows the trick Yet somehow every year he grows More powerful than this

Bridge

Some say he was chosen By the EMS gods Some say administration Simply never looked that hard Some say deep within the office Locked away from human sight There's a form that says "Good enough" Signed late one Friday night

Villian Monologue

I don't need protocols I don't need your charts I passed orientation Using confidence and heart!

Chorus 3

He's the Orientation Miracle The prophecy fulfilled Every crew that works beside him Ends up mentally unwell No one knows the secret No one knows the trick But somehow now he's training people And that's what makes us sick

Outro

And if you listen closely On a quiet summer night You'll hear a preceptor softly weeping Under fluorescent lights...

About this song

This one came from a fan request about a healthcare phenomenon that has baffled coworkers for generations.

The Orientation Miracle.

Everybody was new once.

Everybody has asked a dumb question.

Everybody has made mistakes, needed help, gotten corrected, and learned something the hard way.

This is not about that person.

This is about the person who's been around long enough that the normal explanation of “they're still learning” expired several years ago.

Their coworkers know.

Their preceptors knew.

QA probably knows.

Somewhere, there are likely documents.

And yet they remain.

Which eventually raises one of the great unanswered questions of modern healthcare:

Who cleared this person from orientation?

Nobody remembers.

Nobody will admit to it.

The paperwork has disappeared.

The original preceptor may have changed jobs.

Administration has no comment.

All anyone knows is that, at some mysterious point in history, somebody apparently looked at the situation and decided:

Good enough.

And thus a legend was born.

That's why this had to sound like a giant, theatrical animated musical number.

We're not simply discussing a questionable orientation decision anymore.

We're passing down an ancient legend.

A mysterious figure who survived simulation, remediation, evaluation, QA, and apparently several opportunities for someone to ask additional questions.

Every year, the legend grows stronger.

Until eventually the impossible happens.

The final stage of the prophecy.

You come to work one morning.

You see them sitting beside a brand-new employee.

They're explaining how things are done.

They're answering questions.

They're giving advice.

They're training people now.

And somewhere in the distance...

A preceptor softly weeps under fluorescent lights.
