The words

Lyrics

Intro

Somebody call 911!

Verse 1

It was peaceful in the surgery suite The schedule ran on time Then she woke up from anesthesia Every breath became a climb The alarms began their singing They came running through the door And a building made for surgery Forgot what it was for They tried a little oxygen Then paced around in fear Till someone saw the ambulance And cried

Chorus

Thank God, they’re here! The paramedics have arrived! The tension disappeared The moment that we walked inside One’s carrying a drug bag One says student on his chest But everybody saw us And believed they had been blessed There’s a surgeon, anesthesia And four nurses standing near But none of that matters now Thank God, they’re here!

Verse 2

I stopped beneath the surgical lights And took in everything Every tube and every airway blade All the same drugs that we bring More letters followed every name Than fit upon my chart Yet they looked at me like Moses Had arrived to make seas part I looked over at my student He looked back at me We silently exchanged the words What exactly do they need?

Chorus

Thank God, they’re here! Salvation wears a backwards cap! Our deliverance is near! He’s got a monitor upon his lap! One’s carrying a drug bag One is trying not to stare But everyone found comfort Just because we wandered there There’s a surgeon, anesthesia And enough staff for a year But all of them rejoiced Thank God, they’re here!

Bridge

They had oxygen! (Yes, they did!) They had suction! (Yes, they did!) They had everything! (All the airway tricks!) They had bright lights above them A sterile room below They had everything required But no-one to run the show

Verse 3

So we loaded up the stretcher And rolled her out with care Left the shining operating room For the diesel-scented air To the back of our ambulance That sacred, holy place With mystery stains upon the floor And a lack of convenient space Where someone likely vomited Just fifteen minutes before We passed the tube they wouldn’t pass Inside the operating room The operating room...

Final Chorus

Thank God, they’re here! The paramedics saved the day! The danger disappeared When they rolled the patient away One came wearing a backpack One had student on his chest And somehow they inherited Our beautiful mess From the sterile surgery suite To a parking lot in the rear Modern medicine was saved Thank God, they’re here! (Thank God!) They’re here! (Thank God!) They’re here!

Outro

Brothers and sisters... Never underestimate the healing power Of transferring responsibility. Amen.

About this song

Some songs start with an idea.

Some start with a joke.

This one started with a nurse looking across a chaotic operating room and yelling:

“Oh, thank God, they’re here.”

I was precepting a paramedic student when we were dispatched to an outpatient surgery center for a patient experiencing a significant respiratory emergency after being extubated and coming out of anesthesia.

Now, I've been to plenty of surgery centers over the years.

For reasons I still don't entirely understand, they have a remarkable ability to turn into complete chaos the moment something goes wrong.

This particular day was no exception.

We walked into the operating room and found the whole cast assembled.

Surgeons.

Anesthesia.

OR nurses.

Techs.

More medical credentials than I could probably fit onto one patient care report.

And everyone was running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Then someone noticed us walking through the door.

“Oh, thank God, they’re here.”

And I remember looking around the room and thinking:

What do you mean, “they’re here?”

I'm wearing a backwards hat.

I brought a paramedic student.

You have an entire operating room.

There were people in that room with more letters after their names than I had letters in mine.

They had oxygen.

They had suction.

They had airway equipment.

They had medications.

They had an anesthesiologist.

They had a surgeon.

They had an entire room specifically designed for putting people to sleep, managing their airway, and waking them back up again.

And somehow...

We were the cavalry.

Needless to say, we did what needed to be done.

We took control of the scene, stabilized the patient, got her onto our stretcher, and transported her to the hospital.

The call eventually became just another call.

But that sentence never left.

“Thank God, they’re here.”

Because there is something uniquely hilarious about walking into a room full of highly trained medical professionals with a drug bag, a monitor, a backwards hat, and a paramedic student...

and watching everyone collectively decide:

Perfect. This is their problem now.

And that is the story behind “Thank God, They’re Here!”

A Southern Gospel celebration of modern medicine's most powerful intervention:

Transferring responsibility.
