The words

Lyrics

Intro

*(Doo-wah, doo-wah)* *(Sha-boom, sha-boom)* *(She came so far...)* *(So very far...)*

Verse 1

She left out west at the break of day Had a lunch date waiting many miles away Packed up her bags and she filled up the car Said, "Nothing's gonna stop me..." *(She's gonna go far!)* Blew a tire somewhere in Tennessee The spare went flat around mile marker three A stranger stopped in an old sedan So she hopped right in— *(With a strange, strange man!)* Got pulled over doing eighty-two Officer said, "Lady, what's gotten into you?" She smiled real sweet, said, "I'm meeting my friend!" *(Gotta make it there by ten!)*

Chorus

MADE IT THIS FAR! *(She made it! She made it!)* Through the trouble and the miles! *(So many miles!)* MADE IT THIS FAR! *(Despite the trouble, she's got her smile!)* Through the breakdowns and delays Every detour, every scar Nothing's keeping her from lunch 'Cause she... MADE IT THIS FAR! *(Doo-wah!)*

Verse 2

She caught a flight but it couldn't take off Smoke from the engine made everybody cough They changed her plane, but wouldn't you know— *(Her luggage went to Idaho!)* Got a rental car and she hit the road Stopped for some gas and a Diet Coke Walked back outside, nearly dropped her jaw— *(She became a victim of GRAND THEFT AUTO!)* Police took notes, gave a little shrug She caught a Greyhound with her carry-on Bus broke down, but she wouldn't be late She walked three miles— *(For that lunch date!)*

Chorus

MADE IT THIS FAR! *(She made it! She made it!)* Through the trouble and the miles! *(So many miles!)* MADE IT THIS FAR! *(And she did it all with style!)* Planes could fail And cars could crash But nothing could stop that woman's dash No matter where No matter how far... She was gonna... MAKE IT THIS FAR!

Bridge

There sat Linda by the window At their little corner place She saw her friend come walking in With a smile upon her face They had soup and split a sandwich Talked about her trip from hell Then somewhere right around dessert... She whispered... "I don't feel so well" Linda said, "There's the hospital, You can see it from your chair." She pointed right across the street... "The ER's right there." *(Right there!)* She looked outside... She shook her head... And softly said... "I don't think I can make it." [Beat]

Final Chorus

YOU MADE IT THIS FAR! *(SHE MADE IT! SHE MADE IT!)* Across the country for your lunch! *(JUST FOR LUNCH!)* YOU MADE IT THIS FAR! *(Through the fire and the crunch!)* You lost your bags! Your car got stole! You crossed the country coast to coast! But the hospital's right there And despite this trip you've been on! CALL NINE-ONE-ONE! *(WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!)* SHE ONLY... MADE IT THIS FAR!

Verse 3

Well, we pulled up with the ambulance About two hundred feet away She climbed aboard and took a seat And told me 'bout her day She told me 'bout the tire She told me 'bout the plane She told me 'bout the stolen car The breakdown and the rain I looked across the parking lot The ER shining bright... Then looked at her... And wondered how... I got this call tonight. *(Destiny!)* *(Lucky you!)* Every medic... Every town... Every hospital she passed around... Every road that led this way... Somehow brought her here today.

Final Refrain

She made it this far... *(So very far...)* Through every twist and turn... *(Doo-wah, doo-wah...)* But when the ER's across the street... That's when we learned... She made it through the whole trip... Every plane and every car... But couldn't cross... One little street... After making it... This... Faaaaaar.

About this song

Some people travel incredible distances to reach their destination.

And sometimes, after overcoming every obstacle imaginable, the final two hundred feet apparently require an ambulance.

“Made It This Far” was inspired by one of those EMS calls that becomes more confusing with every new piece of the story.

A woman had traveled an extraordinary distance to meet a friend for lunch, making her way through all the usual hazards of a long trip and passing plenty of places where medical care was available along the way.

She made it to lunch.

Then she didn't feel well.

And despite the emergency department being essentially right across the street...

That's where the journey ended.

Nine-one-one was called, an ambulance was dispatched, and the final tiny stretch of an otherwise enormous trip became an EMS transport.

Naturally, the only reasonable way to tell that story was as a wildly overdramatic 1950s doo-wop travel epic.

The song turns the original idea into a ridiculous coast-to-coast odyssey of flat tires, grounded planes, missing luggage, stolen cars and broken-down buses.

Through all of it, our hero refuses to quit.

She will cross the country.

She will make that lunch date.

She will overcome absolutely anything standing between her and her destination.

Except one little street.
