The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

Sunday morning, sunlight shining Through the stained glass by the door Hands were lifted, voices rising Then somebody hit the floor We came running down the aisle Found you lying by the pew They said you must've caught the Spirit Maybe He just caught you too.

Verse 2

No chest pain and no convulsions Sugar's looking mighty fine Little pale and kinda sweaty Pressure's sixty-nine Skipped your breakfast, locked your knees Caught up in adoration Caught the Spirit Lost circulation

Pre-Chorus

When the choir gets to singing And the room begins to glow Sometimes Heaven hits you harder Than your blood pressure can go Ohhh, let it flow...

Chorus

Holy Spirit overdose Holy Spirit When the praise gets high And the pressure gets low (Get’s low) You were standing in His presence Then you weren't standing at all Holy Spirit overdose Hallelujah Caught the Spirit (Caught the Spirit) Lost circulation (Circulation) And answered gravity's call

Verse 3

Now you're sitting on the stretcher Got some water in your hand Half the church is gathered 'round you Trying hard to understand Twelve-lead's looking reassuring Heart rate sixty-eight and strong Color's slowly coming back now Like nothing ever went wrong Skipped your morning coffee Barely had a thing to eat Then you stood through forty minutes Lost in exaltation Caught the Spirit Lost circulation

Pre-Chorus

When the choir gets to singing And the room begins to glow Sometimes Heaven hits you harder Than your blood pressure can go Ohhh, let it flow

Chorus

Holy Spirit overdose Holy Spirit When the praise gets high And the pressure gets low (Get’s low) You were standing in His presence Then you weren’t standing at all Holy Spirit overdose Hallelujah Caught the Spirit (Caught the Spirit) Lost circulation (Circulation) And answered gravity’s call

Bridge

So raise your hands (Raise ‘em high) Lift your voice (Lift your voice) Feel His presence (Feel His presence) But when the room starts spinning There’s no shame in sitting down Sit on down Bend your knees Bend your knees Eat some breakfast (Eat some breakfast) Drink some water (Drink it down) When the edges start getting darker And the whole room spins around The Lord may lift your spirit Lift your spirit But gravity’ll take you down (Take you down)

Final Chorus

Holy Spirit overdose (Holy Spirit) When the praise gets high And the pressure gets low (Get’s low) You were standing in His presence Then you weren’t standing at all Holy Spirit overdose (Hallelujah) Caught the Spirit Lost circulation (Circulation) And answered gravity’s call Ohhhhhh, stay with me Keep those knees unlocked! Stay with me! Stay with me Holy Spirit overdose(Holy Spirit) Oh, You lift me higher But the pressure’s going lower When the praise gets high (So high) And the pressure gets low (So low) Holy Spirit overdose

About this song

This song is built around a fake diagnosis I made after going to countless syncopal episodes on Sunday mornings.

The pattern was hard to miss: a lot of praise and worship, not much breakfast, and not nearly enough water.

Then someone stands through the service with their knees locked, starts feeling lightheaded, and suddenly the whole church is gathered around them.

No chest pain. No dramatic medical mystery. Sometimes the sugar looks fine, the ECG is reassuring, and a little water and a few minutes sitting down make a big difference.

So I came up with the obvious diagnosis:

Holy Spirit overdose.

Too much praise and worship. Not enough food and water.

It’s a joke about the familiar Sunday morning fainting call and a reminder to eat breakfast, drink some water, and maybe unlock those knees once in a while.
