The words

Lyrics

Intro

The radio crackles, A voice comes through Hey, just a little heads up Whatever you do Don't tell him he has cancer It's a kidney stone.”

Verse 1

He's got a pain in his side He's lost a little weight There's something on the CT That doesn't look so great A shadow on the liver A little something on the bone But everybody keep it easy It's a kidney stone Kidney stone... kidney stone

Pre-Chorus

Don't say the C word Don't ruin the mood We've got a perfectly reasonable Explanation for you

Chorus

Don’t tell him he has cancer It’s a kidney stone Kidney stone No need for explanations Just leave the man alone There's a mass Kidney stone Lymph nodes Kidney stone Something growing where it shouldn't Kidney stone Don't tell him he has cancer It's a kidney stone

Verse 2

The medic looks confused The nurse just raised a brow Radiology is calling But we're not taking questions now There's a lesion in his lung Whoa-oh-oh Watch your clinical tone We have reached a diagnosis Kidney stone

Pre-Chorus

Don't read the chart, dear Don't look too close And please ignore the gentleman From oncology who came to say hello

Chorus

Don’t tell him he has cancer It’s a kidney stone Kidney stone Everybody keep on smiling Like there's nothing going on Weight loss Kidney stone Lung mass Kidney stone Multiple suspicious lesions Kidney stone

Breakdown

Stone, stone, kidney stone Stone, stone, kidney stone Metastatic Stage four Kidney stone Poor prognosis (Hey!) We don't use that word anymore Stone, stone, kidney stone

Final Chorus

Don’t tell him he has cancer It’s a kidney stone Ooh-ooh! Kidney stone No need for explanations We've got everything under control There's a mass Kidney stone In the bone Kidney stone Oncology is at the door Just tell them we’re not home Don’t tell him he has cancer It’s a kidney stone Kidney stone

Outro

Stone, stone Kidney stone Stone, stone Kidney stone

About this song

This song started with a very real radio transmission I heard one day: “Yeah, so he has cancer. The family is requesting that you transport him and tell him it’s a kidney stone.”

I can understand why someone might hesitate to tell a loved one they have cancer. It’s an incredibly difficult conversation, and most people who withhold that kind of information aren’t trying to hurt anyone. They’re trying to protect someone they love.

Hearing that transmission got me thinking about how and when we share devastating news. As healthcare professionals, patients and families trust us to be both compassionate and honest. Sometimes those responsibilities can feel like they’re pulling in opposite directions, especially when a patient asks, “Am I going to die?”

I’m never going to promise someone, “No, not today,” because I can’t control that. I can do everything in my power to care for them and manage what’s happening in front of me, but modern medicine has limits. Telling someone what they want to hear might seem compassionate in the moment, but false reassurance isn’t the same as kindness. To me, honesty is part of compassion.

There’s no single perfect answer for when or how to deliver terrible news. Every patient and every family is different, and there are professional ways to approach those conversations. But people deserve transparency from the healthcare professionals they trust, even when the truth is hard to hear.

That radio transmission left me thinking differently about the balance between honesty and compassion. The subject itself is way too serious to turn into a Synthetic Medic song, though. So naturally, I decided Scandinavian disco was my work around.
