The words

Lyrics

Intro

Well, it snowed all night And it snowed all day And we had no business Being out anyway Heading back through the snow We were finished our call When a voice from the backseat said “Did you just see that lady fall?!”

Verse 1

Well, we turned that truck around Went sliding down the street Found that poor old woman Already on her feet She said, “I'm fine, don't worry” But since we'd come that way We grabbed ourselves some shovels And helped clear out her way Then we climbed back in the truck Cold down to the bone And that's the day we taught that girl A lesson carved in stone

Chorus

Don’t look out that window (Don’t look, don’t look) Keep your eyes inside (Inside that truck!) If the Lord wants us to see it He'll make it loud enough (Yes he will) Don’t look out that window We’re just trying to get home Don’t look out that window We’re just trying to get home

Verse 2

Well, the weeks went by And the student learned She started reading rhythms And knowing where to turn But there was one particular lesson She struggled to get through Every time she saw something We got something else to do She saw a man fall off a roof A car go rolling by She swore she saw it hit the rail And watched that sucker fly Every trip brought something new Another thing gone wrong And every time she'd point it out We'd wish she'd just move on A wreck, a fall, a smoking car Somebody needing aid We'd almost make it back to base Then she'd look out again

Chorus

Don’t look out that window (Turn your head, turn your head) Keep your eyes inside There's enough calls on the board today Don't go finding more outside If it's smoking Don’t you see it If it's falling Let it fall If somebody starts waving We don’t know them at all Don’t look out that window We’re just trying to get home

Bridge

Well, the years went by, she got her patch And learned to run the show She traded in the student seat But some things never go Now she's riding with a partner Teaching lessons of her own But every now and then that old familiar Curse comes rolling on She'll catch something in the distance Then she'll lean up from her seat Sweet Jesus, did you see that plane Her partner skips a beat There's smoke pouring from an engine And it's falling from the sky But unless it lands in front of us We're gonna drive on by Keep your eyes inside Keep your eyes inside

Final Chorus

Don’t look out that window (Don't look, don't look) Keep your eyes inside We survived your student years But the curse is still alive Don’t look out that window (Don’t look, don’t look) Don’t look out that window We’re just trying to get home

About this song

“Don't Look Out That Window” started with one completely innocent observation from one of our paramedic students.

We were heading back from a call after a pretty significant snowstorm. My partner and I were up front, concentrating on the snow-covered road, when a voice from the back seat suddenly asked:

“Did you just see that lady fall?”

No.

No, we did not.

But considering we were driving around in what is essentially a giant rolling billboard for our company, we couldn't exactly hear that and just keep going.

So we turned around.

By the time we got back, the woman was already on her feet and trying to shovel out her driveway. She was perfectly fine, didn't need any emergency care, and told us she had an important appointment she needed to get to.

Since we'd already turned around and come back, we figured we might as well make ourselves useful.

So we grabbed some shovels and helped her clear the driveway.

Then we climbed back into the truck and immediately established a new rule for our student:

Stop looking out the damn window.

That should have been the end of the joke.

Unfortunately, my partner and I have never been particularly good at knowing when a joke has run its course.

For the rest of the ride, “Did you see that lady fall?” started evolving.

Maybe next time she'd spot a car on fire. Maybe somebody would fall off a roof. Maybe she'd look outside just in time to watch an entire plane crash.

The more ridiculous it became, the more certain we were that all of these hypothetical disasters could be prevented by one simple rule:

Keep your eyes inside.

Obviously, our student was not actually cursed, no aircraft fell from the sky, and her habit of looking out the window did not generate additional emergency calls.

It was just one of those stupid little jokes that gets created during a shift, beaten completely into the ground, and somehow becomes part of the crew's vocabulary for years afterward.

And eventually, because this is Synthetic Medic, it became a Celtic punk song.
