Most hospital shifts involve a constant battle to move things along.

Tests need to result.

Patients need beds.

Discharges need to happen.

The waiting room keeps filling up, the caseload keeps growing and everybody needs something.

And then there's that patient.

The one person you desperately do not want to leave.

They feel better.

They've been waiting forever.

They're tired of the food, tired of the monitor, tired of the IV and approximately twelve minutes past being tired of you.

So the sweatshirt goes on.

The belongings get packed.

And suddenly the entire healthcare team is watching the door like the final scene of a tragic romance.

Because one test still hasn't resulted.

One specialist still hasn't called back.

One unanswered question is just concerning enough that everybody would really, really prefer another hour.

“Don’t Leave A.M.A.” turns that moment into the enormous, emotionally overwrought love song it deserves to be.

Not because healthcare workers want to keep somebody trapped in a hospital.

Patients who have decision-making capacity can make their own choices, including the choice to leave.

But sometimes the person walking toward the exit is also the person whose results you're most worried about.

And underneath the paperwork, frustration and absurdity is something completely sincere:

You actually care what happens to them after they walk out that door.

So naturally, the only reasonable way to express that concern was an acoustic glam metal power ballad.
