The words

Lyrics

Intro

Ahhhh, Ahhhh AHHHH Don’t cut the lace Don’t cut the lace

Verse 1

Bare feet on the shingles White dress, wild in the wind Bouquet on the gravel driveway Guests all gone it’s just my skin Veil stuck on the TV antenna Moon laughs over cul-de-sacs I spin like a burned-out ballerina In a gown I can’t take back

Pre-Chorus

Do you take this life To be your haunted bride ’Til gravity Tears you from his side?

Chorus

I was dancing on the rooftop in my wedding dress Spinning out the ending to a crooked “yes” If I hit the ground, let the ground take me But don’t cut the lace, don’t cut it free If I bleed tonight and you drag my body Save my pulse! Save my face But don’t, don’t, don’t Don’t cut the lace

Verse 2

Shingle slips under my heel Whole world tilts then lets me go Sky flips, vows drip Like cheap champagne in my throat Front yard rushing toward me Porch light halo in my eyes Every broken promise Counting down from the night sky

Pre-Chorus

Do you take this pain To be your only home ’Til asphalt kisses Every fragile bone

Chorus 2

I was dancing on the rooftop in my wedding dress Spinning out the ending to a crooked “yes” If I hit the ground, let the ground take me But don’t cut the lace, don’t cut it free If I bleed tonight and you drag my body Save my pulse! Save my face But don’t, don’t, don’t Don’t cut the lace

Bridge

Sirens carve through the silence (hey) Red and blue in my tears Hands reaching through the wreckage “Ma’am, we’re gonna have to cut here” I choke on the taste of metal “Take my breath take the rest take it all Rip the rings from my fingers But leave this dress when I fall” I scream, “If I die, let me die In the one thing that was mine”

Breakdown

Don’t cut the lace Don’t cut the lace (yeah) You can stitch my bones But this is my grave-cloth throne

Chorus 3

I was dancing on the rooftop in my wedding dress Spinning out the ending to a crooked “yes” If I hit the ground, let the ground take me But don’t cut the lace, don’t cut it free If I fade tonight on your metal bed Save my soul! Save my name But don’t, don’t, don’t Don’t cut the lace

Outro

Bare feet in the ether White dress flooding the dark If you wheel me into daylight Wheel me in these torn-up sparks

About this song

“Don’t Cut The Lace” started as an inside joke about a woman tap dancing on her rooftop in her wedding dress.

Naturally, she falls off.

The fall itself isn't really the joke.

The joke is what happens when somebody gets hurt while wearing something they absolutely do not want EMS to destroy.

People have an incredible ability to do very unfortunate things while wearing their nicest and most expensive clothes.

Then the ambulance arrives.

And so do the trauma shears.

Suddenly the clothing becomes a surprisingly important part of the emergency.

We may be concerned about bones, bleeding and whether you can feel your toes.

You're concerned about the outfit.

And honestly?

If the outfit happens to be an expensive wedding dress, I kind of understand.

So we took that ridiculous little observation and gave it the most unnecessarily dramatic treatment possible.

Rooftop dancing.

A doomed bride.

Gravity.

Metalcore.

And a patient who has apparently accepted the possibility of death considerably faster than the possibility of somebody cutting her dress.

Save the patient.

But if at all possible, save the lace too.
