The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

Grandma slipped On a throw rug by the stairs Landed hard Now she's staring at the ceiling fan in prayer I asked her where it hurts She said "everywhere but first" Before you touch a single thing Don't cut my favorite shirt

Pre-Chorus

My hip might be broken My shoulder might be too But that blouse survived three husbands And it's making it through you

Chorus

Don't cut my shirt Please hear my last request You can start an IV You can shock me in the chest You can drag me from the wreckage You can load me on the cot But if those trauma shears come out We're about to fight a lot Don't cut my shirt

Verse 2

Motorcycle in the ditch Guardrail won the fight His leg is pointed east and west At the very same damn time I said "sir we're gonna need To expose the injury" He grabbed his vintage concert tee And looked directly back at me

Pre-Chorus

My femur might be shattered My collarbone might split But Aerosmith signed this thing You're not cutting it

Chorus 2

Don't cut my shirt Please hear my last request You can start an IV You can shock me in the chest You can drag me from the wreckage You can load me on the cot But if those trauma shears come out We're about to fight a lot Don't cut my shirt

Bridge

House upside down Blood on the floor We barely get inside Before we hear her roar "Do whatever you gotta" "Get me out of this mess" But nobody's touching The shirt upon my chest

Breakdown

I've seen heart attacks I've seen wrecked cars I've seen people launched through windshields And dragged for yards I've seen every kind of tragedy This world can serve And somehow every single time They're wearing their best shirt

Chorus 3

Don't cut my shirt I know this sounds absurd But this old thing's been with me Through every twist and turn If today's the day I'm leaving And my number's finally called Then bury me inside this thing And write it on the wall Don't cut my shirt

About this song

There appears to be an unwritten law of emergency medicine:

Nobody gets seriously hurt while wearing clothes they don't care about.

It's never the old yard-work shirt.

Never the stained hoodie that's been sitting in the garage for six years.

Never the free T-shirt from some event nobody remembers attending.

No.

Somehow, when disaster strikes, everybody is wearing their favorite thing.

Grandma has the blouse she's owned for decades.

The motorcycle rider has the vintage concert shirt.

Somebody has the hoodie they bought on a trip fifteen years ago.

And now EMS has arrived carrying trauma shears.

Suddenly the injuries are only part of the emergency.

Don't cut my shirt.

This song lives in similar territory to “Don’t Cut the Lace,” but the joke here is much broader.

It isn't about one particularly expensive or ridiculous piece of clothing.

It's about the bizarre frequency with which people seem to get hurt while wearing something they absolutely, positively do not want destroyed.

Which creates one of those uniquely strange EMS negotiations.

The patient understands that something may be broken.

They understand that you need to examine them.

They understand why you're holding the shears.

And they would still like you to find another solution.

Preferably immediately.

Because bones heal.

They don't make that shirt anymore.

And sometimes, underneath the absurdity, they're not entirely wrong for caring.

Clothes can carry memories.

Concerts. Vacations. People. Places. Entire chapters of somebody's life.

Which is why the final chorus gets just a little more sincere.

Maybe it's just a shirt to everybody else.

But apparently, if tragedy is going to strike, it's going to wait until you're wearing your favorite one.
