The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

We were tangled in the bedsheets Breathing hard like last to leave You were laughing at my bravado Said, relax, you gotta breathe Then my chest lit up like thunder Left arm heavy feeling slow You said, baby is this acting I said, guess I'm stealing the show (oh no)

Chorus

Guess I really took “come and go” too far this time Hit the peak then flatlined right on the finish line If I check out on your pillow that’s some exit though Signed my name in racing stripes Then I had to go Come and go Come and go

Verse 2

Paramedics in the hallway You in nothing but my shirt You said, Doc, he died a legend I said, damn, but it still hurts They were asking what had happened You just pointed at the bed Said he gave me all he had Man now he just looks dead" (hey)

Chorus 2

Guess I really took “come and go” too far this time Hit the peak then flatlined right on the finish line If I check out on your pillow that’s some exit though Signed my name in racing stripes Then I had to go Come and go

Bridge

If this is it At least the story’s wild Not a quiet fade But a fireworks goodbye Tell them carve it on my stone Let the whole town know Loved too hard Went too fast Came and had to go (woah)

Chorus 3

Guess I really took “come and go” too far this time Hit the peak then flatlined right on the finish line If I check out on your pillow that’s some exit though Signed my name in racing stripes Then I had to go Come and go Come and go Come and go

About this song

“Come And Go” came from the kind of day where EMS gallows humor tends to show up whether you invited it or not.

We'd worked three cardiac arrests over the course of the day and hadn't gotten a single patient back.

By the end of it, everyone was tired, emotionally drained, and pretty much out of useful things to say.

The final arrest happened during a particularly intimate moment in the patient's day.

We worked the call, did everything we could, and eventually started the drive back to the station.

Somewhere along that ride, after an entire day of death and unsuccessful resuscitations, my brain apparently decided what the situation needed most was an incredibly inappropriate joke.

“Talk about coming and going.”

It was terrible.

We laughed anyway.

Sometimes that's gallows humor: not making light of the person you couldn't save, but finding one stupid moment of levity after carrying something heavy all day.

Naturally, Synthetic Medic turned that one terrible joke into a three-minute acoustic pop song.
