The words

Lyrics

Intro

I called nine-one-one, told 'em I can't breathe, Got a little situation, need some help for me, Said I couldn't speak a sentence, couldn't finish what I mean, Now I'm waiting on the medics while I'm staring at my screen.

Verse 1

It started in the kitchen 'bout a quarter after three, I was making macaroni when it happened suddenly, Had a tightness in my chest and a little in my knees, So I called my cousin Karen, who's a nurse in Tennessee. Well, she wasn't really nursing, she's a dental hygienist, But she knows a lot of medicine, at least that's what she insists, Said it might be something cardiac, or possibly a cyst, So I Googled all my symptoms, now I've got a whole damn list. Got a headache, got a backache, got a tickle in my throat, Got a weird recurring feeling like I'm floating in a boat, And my neighbor had pneumonia back in nineteen ninety-four, So I called an ambulance, then I went and locked the door.

Pre-Chorus

Now they're knocking, now they're calling, Now they're standing on my step, And I really need to tell 'em Everything that happened yet!

Chorus

I can't speak in full sentences! Can't you see I'm out of breath? I've been talking for an hour, And I haven't finished yet! I can't speak in full sentences! There's a tightness in my chest! And before you ask me questions, Let me tell you all the rest!

Verse 2

Well, the medic's in the doorway with a monitor and bag, And he's asking me some questions while he's checking out my sats, But I haven't told him half of what I really need to say, Like the time I had a fever on a Wednesday back in May. And my blood pressure's a problem but it's usually okay, Except the days it gets a little high or drops the other way, And I haven't taken medicine since sometime yesterday, But I doubled up on vitamins 'cause that's what people say. And my daughter's got a boyfriend who I really can't stand, And my wife is always telling me I'm getting out of hand, And my landlord's got a problem with the garbage in the can, And the doctor never listens, so I hope you understand!

Pre-Chorus

Don't interrupt me, let me finish, I've got details you should know, And I know you're checking vitals, But there's more before we go!

Chorus

I can't speak in full sentences! Can't you see I'm out of breath? I've been talking for an hour, And I haven't finished yet! I can't speak in full sentences! There's a tightness in my chest! And before you ask me questions, Let me tell you all the rest!

Verse 3

I've got a history of dizziness, a little bit of bitterness, A tendency to Google every symptom like a specialist, A cabinet of supplements, a list of contraindications, And a cousin with a theory 'bout electromagnetic radiation. Got a prescription for a condition that I never understood, And a suspicion that the medication's doing more harm than good, Got a physician with a mission but he never calls me back, And a nutritionist who told me I should probably cut the snacks! Got a little palpitating, hyperventilating, Complicated situation that I'm overcomplicating, Every question that you're asking has an answer I've been saving, And I'm trying to explain it but my patience is evaporating!

Bridge

Why's everybody looking at me Like there's something I don't see? I'm just trying to explain it, Why won't anybody listen to me?

Final Verse

I was sittin' in the kitchen with a tickle and a twitch, Got a little bit of tightness and an itch I couldn't fix, Got a flutter and a shudder and a stutter in my chest, So I called my Aunt Patricia 'cause she knows about the rest! Got a history of mystery, a list of my conditions, Got a doctor with a theory and a stack of prescriptions, Got a tingling, a ringing, and a funny little feeling, And a neighbor with a cousin who's a nurse up in a building! Checked my pressure, checked it twice, checked it seven times again, Got a number, got another, got a different one at ten, Got a sister, got a brother, got a cousin, got a friend, Told 'em every little detail from beginning to the end! Now I'm panickin', I'm ramblin', I'm rapidly unravelin', Got a medic in my kitchen and he's wonderin' what's happenin', And I'm talkin' and I'm talkin' and I'm talkin' even faster, Got a question 'bout my breathing but I'm talkin' right on past ya, And I'm tryin' to explain it but the details are a factor, And I haven't even gotten to the part about my asthma!

Final Chorus

I can't speak in full sentences! Can't you see I'm out of breath? I've been talking since you got here, And I haven't finished yet! I can't speak in full sentences No, I can't speak in full sentences

About this song

In EMS, the phrase “can't speak in full sentences” can be an important clue that someone is struggling to breathe. It's something we take seriously.

But every once in a while, you meet someone who tells you they can't get a sentence out… and then proceeds to deliver a twenty-minute, uninterrupted medical autobiography.

Before you can ask about their breathing, you've heard about their blood pressure, their supplements, their cousin's dental career, and a neighbor who had pneumonia in 1994.

And just when you think they're finished, they haven't even gotten to the part about their asthma.

This song takes that familiar EMS experience and cranks it up to ridiculous speed. The faster the patient talks, the longer the story gets, and the harder it becomes for the medic to squeeze in a single question.

The joke isn't that breathing complaints aren't real. It's the spectacular contradiction between saying you can't speak and somehow never stopping.
