Lyrics

Intro

One shot One chance One simple design Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh!

Verse 1

Dinner was going just fine Till the hives started climbing up high Lips getting bigger by the second And breathing's getting harder every time Someone's yelling call nine-one-one Someone's asking what they ate a hero comes charging through the crowd With an EpiPen ready to save the day He tears it open like a pro Everybody moves aside He's got confidence to spare And determination in his eyes There's just one tiny little problem One detail he let slide Which end goes toward the patient Guess we're gonna find out tonight

Pre-Chorus

There are pictures on the label There are colors on the side There's one simple rule You need to keep in mind

Chorus

Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh! When the airway starts to close You don't get a second try Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh! It's a beautifully simple system If you hold the damn thing right!

Verse 2

He plants his fist against the leg Everybody holds their breath Pushes down and waits to hear That little click that's supposed to help For half a second, he's victorious Till the patient doesn't change Then a burning in his own hand Says something went terribly strange He slowly turns his fist around And everybody understands Orange end pointing at the ceiling And the needle's in his hand

Verse 3

Now the patient's still there wheezing And our hero needs attention too One problem walked into the story Congrats, well now there's two One needs epi for the reaction One needs someone checking out his hand And somewhere there's a paramedic Trying hard to understand There were colors There were arrows There were pictures on the side Yet somehow all those helpful clues Were simply cast aside

Pre-Chorus

Say it once Say it twice Burn these words into your mind Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh!

Chorus

Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh! When the airway starts to close You don't get a second try Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh! It's a beautifully simple system If you hold the damn thing right!

Bridge

You wanted to be the hero You wanted to save the day Your heart was in the right place Your thumb just got in the way So if another emergency Should ever come your way Remember what you've learned here And everybody say

Build

Blue sky Orange thigh Blue sky Orange thigh Read directions Check before injection Blue to the sky Orange to the thigh You tried to save one patient And somehow multiplied

Final Chorus

Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh! Scream it from the rooftops So nobody gets it wrong next time Blue to the sky! Orange to the thigh!

About this song

Some emergency instructions become memorable because they're complicated.

This one became memorable because it really isn't.

Blue to the sky.
Orange to the thigh.

It's the classic reminder for orienting an EpiPen during an allergic emergency: keep the blue safety end away from the patient and the orange needle end toward the thigh.

Simple.

Memorable.

And yet emergency medicine has a remarkable ability to demonstrate that even the simplest instructions can become considerably more complicated once adrenaline enters the room.

“Blue to the Sky, Orange to the Thigh” takes that familiar saying and follows the unfortunate hypothetical hero who remembers that an EpiPen is supposed to save the day...

...but forgets which end goes where.

Suddenly one patient with an allergic reaction has become one patient with an allergic reaction and one extremely confused rescuer with a new problem of his own.

His intentions were excellent.

His orientation was not.

Beneath the joke is a genuinely useful reminder: emergencies are stressful, and simple instructions are worth learning before the moment you actually need them.

So we turned one of the easiest phrases in emergency medicine into a pop-punk chorus designed to become permanently lodged in your brain.

Because if you're going to remember only two colors during an emergency...

Blue to the sky.
Orange to the thigh.
