The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

He’s got boots by the bed Radio on the nightstand Jumps up swingin’ that door Like a busted rubber band Keys in the air Hat on backwards, heart gone wild Burnin’ up gravel in his old red truck Grinnin’ like a problem child

Chorus 1

Blue lights, blue lights, screamin’ down Main Treatin’ every stop sign like it’s just for decoration He’s a volunteer hero with a half-tanked brain On a full-speed salvation vacation If you hear him comin’, better say your prayers He’ll save your house, but wreck your stairs Blue lights, blue lights, Lord have mercy, sound the alarm He’s doin’ ninety for a false alarm

Verse 2

Cuts off a bride Right in front of that church Drives between the bridesmaids Like a cattle drive in a white dress desert Takes out the arch Rings the bell with his rear-view glass Yells, I’ll sign the guest book later Gotta move my… truck on past

Chorus 2

Blue lights, blue lights, screamin’ down Main Treatin’ every stop sign like it’s just for decoration He’s a volunteer hero with a half-tanked brain On a full-speed salvation vacation If you hear him comin’, better say your prayers He’ll save your house, but wreck your stairs Blue lights, blue lights, Lord have mercy, sound the alarm He’s doin’ ninety for a false alarm

Bridge

Cuts through a strip mall, turns brick to dust Punches his bumper through a jewelry store front Guess y’all needed a drive-thru, anyhow Waves at the manager, never slows down Jumps that hill by the cemetery fence Over a funeral, folks all tense He tips his hat, hollers, Don’t you cry I’m just passin’ over, not sayin’ goodbye

Verse 3

Slides in sideways At the bay doors, smoke all tires Trips on the curb, hits the wall Still ready to fight some fires Chief’s just sippin’ Coffee in a folding chair Says, Son, that call got canceled Ten whole minutes ‘fore you got here

Chorus 3

Blue lights, blue lights, screamin’ down Main Treatin’ every stop sign like it’s just for decoration He’s a volunteer hero with a half-tanked brain On a full-speed salvation vacation If you hear him comin’, better say your prayers He’ll save your house, but wreck your stairs Blue lights, blue lights, Lord have mercy, sound the alarm He totaled half the county for a false alarm

Outro

He kicks the tire, laughs it off Says, Guess I’ll fill up while I’m here Chief says, Boy, if we ever get a real one I’m hidin’ everybody’s keys this year

About this song

“Blue Lights And False Alarms” goes out with love to my volunteer firefighter friends.

Specifically, the ones who seem to believe that something remarkable happens to the laws of physics the moment that blue light gets switched on.

The inspiration came from responding to calls in the medic truck and occasionally having to get out of the way of a volunteer firefighter racing toward the station.

For the same call.

The medic unit is already responding.

The fire apparatus hasn't even left the station yet.

But somewhere behind you is a pickup truck approaching at a speed suggesting that this particular firefighter has been personally selected to save the county.

Blue light activated. Invincibility achieved.

Of course, the song takes that familiar experience and pushes it completely into absurdity: weddings destroyed, storefronts converted into drive-thrus, funerals jumped and half the county demolished on the way to the firehouse.

All in the name of getting there as quickly as humanly possible.

Only to discover the call was canceled ten minutes ago.

Volunteer firefighters do an incredible amount for their communities.

But fellas, the blue light does not come with a force field.
