The words

Lyrics

Verse 1

Rolled up to the curb Lights painting the wall You meet me at the doors Tell me “give me it all” So I start from the top like a stand up bit You ready for the saga? (okay, here’s the stitch) Unknown down time Found face in the rug Roommate freaking out Screaming and shook up Threw on the pads Chucked the bag on the floor Worked the code Got a pulse Yeah, We've been here before

Chorus

I pushed the meds I ran the code I rode the rail down bumpy roads I did the dance The trauma show I saved a life between every pothole You want the big reveal from me The detail you just gotta see? Wait for it Wait and see Eighteen in the left A.C

Verse 2

Airway's patent Yeah, they're breathing okay Got a stat line humming Sugar's okay today Twelve lead clean I could frame that strip Pressure holding steady Never even dipped You’re scribbling in the box Eyebrow raised at my face “Can you speak in bullets Not a Shakespeare play?” I lean on the rail Drop my voice real low “This is the part you really need to know”

Chorus 2

I pushed the meds I ran the code I rode the rail down bumpy roads I did the dance The trauma show I saved a life between every pothole You want the big reveal from me The detail you just gotta see? Wait for it Wait and see Eighteen in the left A.C

Bridge

You’ve heard this speech a thousand nights Different name Same flashing lights But I live for that tiny cheer When I say the words you’re dying to hear

Chorus 3

I pushed the meds I ran the code I rode the rail down bumpy roads I did the dance The trauma show I saved a life between every pothole You want the big reveal from me The line that sets your paperwork free? Here it is Your favorite key: Eighteen in the left A.C Yeah Write it big so the world can see Eighteen in the left A.C

About this song

Paramedics have preferences.

Favorite equipment.

Favorite airway tricks.

Favorite places to sit in the ambulance.

And then there is the near-mythological appeal of the 18 gauge IV in the left AC.

It's big.

It's useful.

The antecubital vein is usually pretty hard to miss.

And once the patient is on the stretcher, the left arm is conveniently sitting right beside the bench seat where the paramedic spends the ride.

It's practical.

It's accessible.

It's reliable.

And for some medics, apparently, it is the pinnacle of prehospital medicine.

That's the medic in this song.

He could have managed an airway, interpreted the ECG, administered medications, stabilized the patient, worked a cardiac arrest, gotten ROSC and delivered somebody alive to the emergency department.

Those are all important details.

But they're not the detail.

The nurse waits.

The medic finishes the report.

He lowers his voice.

The guitars begin to swell.

Because it's finally time for everyone to hear what really happened tonight.

Eighteen.

Left.

A.C.

This song is a metal tribute to the paramedic who takes a perfectly ordinary piece of IV access just a little too seriously.

The patient lived.

That's great.

But did you hear where I put the IV?
